Elizabeth Taylor’s Genetic Mutation

Can you imagine your eyes without eyelashes? What if you have a double row of eyelashes instead? This is the very feature of the late Elizabeth Taylor’s eyelashes. Elizabeth has been regarded by many as the world’s most beautiful woman. What will be easily noticed is Elizabeth’s dark hair, light complexion and most of all, her violet eyes perfectly framed by a double row of eyelashes.

During her birth, the doctor who delivered her said that her eyelashes were the result of a genetic mutation. Though the mutation on Elizabeth Taylor eyelashes only did a great job on framing her violet eyes. Her mother, after hearing those words only said that it was not that too horrible after all. It was revealed that her condition is a disease called distichiasis, a genetic mutation resulting in the abnormal development of the FOXC2 gene thus, giving the effect of a double set of eyelashes.

This kind of condition is painful when the lashes of the second row did not develop in a straight way or are too close to the eyes. As the normal set of eyelashes grow on the outer surface of the lid, the second row of the eyelashes does not develop on the surface of the eyelid. Instead, it grows on the gland of the eyelid. However, this may be treated by removing the second row of lashes or by wearing contact lenses.

Despite this condition, Elizabeth Taylor’s eyelashes light her way to success and stardom all over the world. Not all people may be as lucky to have this kind of condition. Some may have eyelashes grown inward or not the right way. As for Elizabeth Taylor’s eyelashes, they perfectly fit her violet eyes.
